We want to talk about the opportunities and limitations of diplomacy in countries that suffer from instable political situations such as Iraq, Syria or Yemen. Prof. Dr. Athar Sultan-Khan will give first hand insights of his work as Special Advisor on diplomatic matters to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Svanhildur Thorvalsdottir, post-doctoral researcher at LMU Munich.

The discussion is open to the public and will be held in English.

Prof. Dr. Athar Sultan-Khan

In his 38 years of experience in the United Nations, Athar Sultan-Khan managed numerous UNHCR operations and diplomatic efforts in different regions, including Iraqi, Syrian, Yemeni, Somali, Congolese, Afghan and Western Sahara refugee situations. He served as a Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General in the Executive Office and Special Advisor on diplomatic matters to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He also served as Chef de Cabinet to three consecutive High Commissioners and held various representation posts in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. He is currently Honorary Dean and Professor of International Relations at the Geneva School of Diplomacy.

Dr. Svanhildur Thorvaldsdottir

Dr. Thorvaldsdottir is a post-doctoral research fellow Chair in Political Systems and European Integration at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University. Her current research focuses on the bureaucratic politics of international organizations, especially the United Nations, with a special focus on budgeting and finance.Prior to her PhD studies, Svanhildur was a Senior Policy Analyst at the International Peace Institute in New York City.
